SEEKING ASSISTANCE FOR R.K. SUNDARAM’S FAMILY

Respected Sir / Ma’m,

Celebrated Gandhian activist and champion of civil rights during the Emergency days, R.K.Sunraram (Sundarji) is dead. The end came on 2 February 2018 at his residence at Kaliyakkavilai, Tamil Nadu. He was 87.

He is survived by wife, Sreedevi Amma, two sons and a daughter. One son (Sudhir) works as a temporary employee of K.S.R.T.C. (Kerala) on meager daily wages. The other son (Sunil), married, is a daily wage earner. The daughter (Sunitha), a speech-impaired person, has been abandoned by husband and lives with the mother, who is in a state of shock since the death of her husband. The family owns 10 cents of land. But the house, on the verge of collapse and submersible in times of heavy rain, is uninhabitable. The family is in deep distress and deserves our support.

Already as a student, through the Bhoodan Movement, Sundarji was attracted to the Gandhian way of social action. He was trained at the Kahadigram Ashram, in Monge District in Bihar with specialization in Village Re-construction. Having completed the training, he worked in the northern parts of Kerala under late Sri. Ikkandawarrier, State Coordinator of the Bhoodhan Movement. Sundarji worked in close collaboration with illustrious social activists, such as Sri. K. Kelappaji, Sri. A.V. Sreekanda Poduval, touring throughout Kerala and interacting with and trying to uplift the downtrodden. Sundarji was associated with the Kurumpanad Development Society, with the Thirunavaya Intensive Area Scheme and has been an active member of the Gandhi Peace Foundation team ever since 1960.

During the dark days of the National Emergency, he was arrested, put in jail and brutally tortured, leading to the break-down of his health, from which he never recovered. Despite poor health and financial constraints, Sundarji continued to be a vigorous campaigner of the socialist cause. He was active also in the Kanyakumari District of Tamil Nadu as a social activist and friend of the poor.

With the aim of raising funds to assist his distressed family, a family welfare fund has been set up in his name. You are solicited to make generous contributions to the fund.
