State Level Workshop on Vocational Skill Training: Jobs, Opportunities and Challenges 16 November 2010 Venue: Santhigram, Chappath, Near Vizhinjam, Thiruvananthapuram Supported by Functional Vocational Training and Research Society (FVTRS), Bangalore BRIEF REPORT Santhigram with the support of FVTRS organized a one day workshop on 16.11.2010 at Swaraj Bhavan, Chappath, Vizhinjam, Thiruvananthapuram on Vocational Training, opportunities and challenges. The program started with a prayer by Smt. I. Vijayakumari. Sri. L. Pankajakshan, Director, Santhigram welcomed the guests and the gathering. Sri. M. Valsalam, President, Athiyannoor Block Panchayat (BP) in his presidential address recalled his long association with the activities of Santhigram and promised to jointly work in future in the Block Panchayat. Mr. Roofas Daniel, Vice President, Thiruvananthapuram District Panchayat inaugurated the workshop. He also recalled his long association with Santhigram and its activities in Venganoor Gram Panchayat. He congratulated Santhigram for organizing Vocational Training Programs for the youth. He opined that the LSGIs and voluntary agencies should jointly work and that joint efforts will ensure successful programs with people’s participations. In his keynote address FVTRS Executive Director Sri. Albert Joseph clearly explained the details of FVTRS supported courses. He mentioned that these courses are mainly for dropouts and 10th failed. However they can simultaneously study for matriculation and get and get certificates. This was followed by felicitations speeches by Gram Panchayat (GP) Presidents, Smt. E. Monica Yohannan (Karumkulam), Sri. V. Sivakumar (Kottukal), Sri. Mangalathukonam Raju (Venganoor) Adv. Anto Marcilin (Poovar), Sri. A.P. Sasikumar (Athiyannoor) and Smt. Sarasi Kuttappan (Kanjiramkulam). Sri Anto Marcilin stated that the Panchayat presidents should not become mere signatories but should be careful in planning and implementing projects. He congratulated Santhigram in taking the initiative to voluntarily opt to come under the preview of Right to Information Act. Thiruvananthapuram Corporation councilors from the former Vizhinjam Panchayat area, Smt. H. Sukukari (Venganoor) and Smt. C. Omana (Mulloor) were also present. Smt Omana Congratulated Santhigram for organizing the reception to all people’s representatives irrespective of political affiliation. Sri. R. K. Sundaram, Chairperson, Santhigram offered shawls to the guest and Mr. Albert Joseph, Executive Director, FVTRS presented mementos with Talisman of Mahatma Gandhi. Sri. M. Bhaskaran (Member, Kottukal G.P), Smt. Praveena (Member, Poovar GP), Smt. Jayakumari Thankachi (Member, Athiyannoor GP), Smt. Mariyamma Kesari, (Member, Athiyannoor BP) Smt. Shailaja (Member, Athiyannoor BP) also participated. Smt. Latha Pushpangathan, Vice President, Poovar GP proposed a vote of thanks. The program ended by 11.30. At 11.45 the workshop on Vocational Training, opportunities and challenges commenced. Dr. V. Rajasenan Nair, Deputy Director, Nehru Yuva Kendra Sangathan was the Chairman. Mrs. G. S Santhamma welcomed the gathering. Sri. Albert Joseph, Executive Director, FVTRS delivered the keynote address. He pointed out that lack of skills is the major challenge facing the youth in successfully employed. Every youth should have a clear goal in opting for skill development. They should acquire relevant technical knowledge to get opportunities. The youth should utilize the opportunities made available to them. Sri. G. Pavithra Kumar, Lecturer, Govt. Polytechnic, Neyyatinkara explained the schemes offered by Community Polytechnics. With interesting examples he emphasized the need for motivation to achieve objectives. The chairman made the concluding remarks. Ms. Sivaprabha shared her experience in attending the computer Hardware course. Sri. Albert Joseph distributed the certificates and toolkits for those who have successfully completed the courses. After lunch break Sri. Issac Singh, Director, SWAN, Monday Market and Convenor SPIN Network took class on EDP. He clearly explained the do’s and don’ts in taking up a profession. The program concluded with National Anthem at 3.30. The program was attended by around 125 peoples including Nine Representatives of NGO, the trainees of Autorikshaw Driving, Tailoring, Aluminium Fabrication and Computer Hardware.
